Quick Thoughts on Zone 1

Zone 1 is a half circle around the net including the goalies crease. It has an 8 foot radius. This area represents in tight, quick reaction chances. "REBOUNDS." After playing the first shot a butterfly goalie is down and usually out of position. A player must get the puck over the outstretched goalie quick. The top shelf is the highest scoring probabilty. This area is a battle with lots of bodies so the player most be able to react and shoot from both forehand and backhand. The important thing to remember is to bear down in this area and hit the upper third of the net.

"It's now how you score but how many."

Hockey Shooting Tips for Zone 1

(descending order of highest goal scoring probability on butterfly goalie from Zone 1)

1. Upper Left Hand Corner

2. Over the Goalie's Shoulder (Top Shelf)

3. Upper Right Hand Corner

---Entire Orange Colored Area---

Many players make a living picking up the "garbage" in front of the net. Take a look at how many times Phil Esposito was the highest goal scorer in the league on the home page.

The entire top shelf of the net will be open. Most likely the chance is a result of a rebound or some flurry of action that the goaltender has already reacted too and is now down and out of position. This leaves the entire top shelf of the net to shoot at. The player is very close to the goalie so they must focus on getting the puck up quickly.
