Quick Thoughts on Zone 2

Many great players have scored a lot of goals from the right face off circle area. It begins at the end of the goalies crease in Zone 1 and ends near the boards with a radius of 45 feet. A shot from this area usually results from 3 situations:

1. An offensive rush and shot from the right side boards as the player (usually right winger) is forced wide by the D.

2. A cycle out of the corner where the player brings the puck to the net for a quick shot.

3. A one-timer opportunity on a power play with the pass coming from the D.

The far side post from Zone 2 is the goalies stick side. NHL players will look the goalie off short side (much like a quarterback disguises his passes) and shoot low to the far post.

"Mark Messier patented this shot in the 80's."

Hockey Shooting Tips for Zone 2

(descending order of highest goal scoring probability on the butterfly goalie from Zone 2)

3. Upper Right Hand Corner

Goalies tend to over compensate toward the stick side when a player is shooting from Zone 2. As the player moves closer to the net it forces the goalie deeper into the crease and opens up this scoring area. A "quick release" with finely tuned accuracy is essential to score here. That's why the opening is so small.

4. Lower Left Hand Corner

This is the goalies stick side. An experienced goal scorer will skate vertically with speed through Zone 2 and shoot away from his body to this corner. The goalie's stick isn't quick enough to defend a well placed shot.

5. Five-Hole

A goalie is taught to come out of the net and aggresively play the shooter in Zone 2. Entering this zone with speed(vertical or even better horizontally) will force the goalie to move his feet. This opens up the five hole.
